Signs a sump pump needs attention
- The pump does not start when water rises
- It runs constantly without clearing the crock
- It makes unusual grinding or rattling sounds
- The basement gets water even though drain tile is present
- The discharge line is restricted or poorly routed
The pump is only one part of the system
A replacement pump may not solve a basement-water problem if the drain tile is clogged, disconnected, undersized, or not delivering water to the sump. Likewise, a good drainage system still depends on a working pump and a sensible discharge path.
Planning for heavy rain
Storms can put the highest load on a basement drainage system. If the pump struggles during wet weather, the cause should be checked before the next major rainfall.
